What does the National Curriculum say?
The National Curriculum encourages pupils to read for both pleasure and information. It’s ultimate goal is for pupils to read fluently and with a depth of understanding. As pupils develop this understanding, their love for reading increases and their passion follows them into adult life. Reading is a lifelong skill and therefore requires that pupils read a range of texts, develop a sophisticated vocabulary and understand grammatical conventions. The National Curriculum also hopes to develop linguistic skills through oracy and for pupils to appreciate our rich literary heritage through classical texts.
How do we achieve this at Hartley Primary School?
Pupil’s begin their reading journey by being taught to sound out words through the ‘Read Write Inc’ phonics programme. Teachers then nurture these skills by developing increased fluency and improving pupil’s understanding using direct questioning. As children develop their wider reading skills, they’re encouraged to explore a variety of challenging texts in order to improve their vocabulary and make connections. Teachers will also encourage pupils to utilise various other skills such as predicting, clarifying and summarising as they develop a more comprehensive understanding of the text they read.
Developing a Love of Reading
We at Hartley Primary School encourage pupils to harbour a deep love of reading which will resonate throughout their adult life. Our school has been developing our reading culture in order to give pupils a myriad of exciting opportunities. Examples of these can be seen throughout the year. From our celebration of World Book Day, to our Summer Reading Challenge and throughout our frequent educational visits to East Ham Library, Hartley Primary School creates opportunities for pupils to develop their love of reading. We have also ensured that our reading culture extends beyond the academic school year. Ensuring that library cards are given to each pupil has enabled children within Hartley Primary to enjoy reading outside of school and positively affected the wider community.
How are core British values / Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Values promoted?
At Hartley Primary School, the ideals of mutual respect, integrity and democracy are echoed in the texts we select for reading. We, as a school, explore a plethora of texts which embody these values and explore a multitude of characters from a variety of cultures. We use poetry, stories and non-fiction texts to explore themes such as equality, justice, freedom, tolerance and democracy. We encourage pupils to think about their own behaviours and actions as well as others and celebrate the notion of difference within society. The school regularly gives its pupils a platform to debate and discuss moral and ethical issues which arise in stories and texts which have been read.
How can parents/carers support learning at home?
There are a variety of ways that parents/carers can encourage pupils to read at home. This can be achieved through exposing pupils to a range of texts including stories, newspaper articles, magazines, comic books and biographies. Encouraging pupils to read a mixture of fiction and non-fiction creates a more well-rounded, holistic reader capable of engaging a breadth of subjects. It is vital pupils are given the opportunity to explore, discuss, clarify, summarise and make predictions about what they read at home. Parent/cares can aid this process by discussing any new vocabulary encountered, expressing their own opinions about the text and by linking these opinions to evidence within the text.
